The rapidly evolving international matrix of global economic sanctions and trade controls enacted in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine came with unprecedented swiftness, scope and co-ordination amongst the EU, US, UK, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and others. These sanctions have impacted nearly every sector of the economy and business including, capital markets, M&A, securities and finance. Most companies have transitioned from crisis management to assessing how to manage these new risks going forward, navigating the complexities and sometimes significant differences between the regimes. This risk management includes major decisions regarding maintaining, evolving, or exiting Russian operations, business and business partners, with many companies in sanctioning countries deciding that compliance and reputation risk weigh in favour of divestment to willing third country or non-sanctioned Russian buyers. We will examine theses new risks and how we are seeing our clients in both sanctioning and non-sanctioning home markets make the strategic decisions necessary to manage them within the company's risk tolerance, from a regulatory, enforcement and transactional perspective, across key jurisdictions.
